Let the Games Begin!

Last night's games were truly the best first games of any Sports Camp to date. Every single match was competitive and fierce!

The football game between Stanford and UNC was the last game to finish. Many other teams gathered around the stadium to see the  outcome. The Cardinal and the Tarheels traded scores throughout the entire game. Right down to the final twelve seconds. Just when everyone thought UNC pulled ahead for the final score, the Cardinal quarterback hit two different receivers, once for the touchdown and then again for the final one pt conversion which sealed the game. It was an amazing effort by both teams and they showed great sportsmanship.

All of the game scores are posted to the right of this blog entry. Each day we will post scores beginning with the morning session. Because we only played night games yesterday you'll need to scroll down to the bottom to see the last night's scores.

The basketball game went back and forth as well. Notre Dame and Michigan both have some ballers! The 'Cage' was rockin' with excitement the whole time and the Wolverines were able to pull off the win in the final seconds by a score of 36-35.

The lacrosse game on Gillespie Family Field went into overtime. It was a tight game throughout the entire match. At the end of regulation the game was tied at two. LSU pulled ahead in overtime leaving the score 3-2. Coach Gay gathered the teams together at the end of the game to congratulate them on their play and their sportsmanship. Both teams were supportive their own teammates and their opponent. It was a great first night of games!

Monday actually began with breakfast and then we gathered at the Dick Gym for a morning meeting. The first awards were given out. It's not typical to award Camper of the Day or Coach of the Day on the first full day of camp. It usually takes a few days for the camp to get into some type of groove but yesterday there were two worthy recipients. Our Camper of the Day is a second year camper who almost single-handedly organized a soccer clinic for his team showing great leadership and initiative. He really has taken the advice of Coach Alexander by becoming an assistant coach. Coach of the Day was awarded to a recent Woodberry alumnus, Lionel Johnson. Lionel went over an above in a few areas on dorm last night. Lionel leads by example and is compassionate and thoughtful.

Once the awards were given out and some general business was out of the way, everyone went down the hill. The teams practiced their choice of sport. By 10:15am it was time for canteen. The morning canteen offerings included fruit, cheese, Gatorade and water. After canteen the campers broke off into their individual age groups. Each age group is assigned to a specific sport. Campers participated in golf, tennis, lacrosse skills, football skills, basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, swimming, strength training, wrestling, or speed training. After a 45 minute session the groups switched to another sport.

After a very full morning the camp enjoyed a "fair like" lunch of corn dogs and french fries. The dining hall smelled fabulous! For those campers, counselors, and bloggers who look for lighter fare the salad bar and sandwich bar are stocked daily with fresh offerings like broccoli, chicken and egg salad along with fresh meats, cheeses and bread.

Rest period was extremely quiet yesterday. The campers and counselors were ready to get off their feet and some even grabbed some Zzzz's. They were wiped out after the first full morning of camp.

By 2:30pm three teams were in their bathing suits and ready to go to the outdoor pool where they played basketball in the water or volleyball on the sand courts.

While three teams were enjoying the outdoor pool the rest of camp took part in our first clinics. During breakfast campers sign up for a clinic of their choice. They can sign up by team or as an individual. The clinics offered include basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer, baseball, wrestling, golf and tennis.

We ended the day with two teams sleeping out at the campsite and everyone else visiting the Fir Tree. Navy and West Point enjoyed smores and hotdogs at the campsite. After showering and grabbing their pillows these two teams stopped off at the football game before heading to the campsite.

All of the teams discussed the topic of Establishing Goals during their values meeting last night. They began by talking about the importance of goals and how to set goals. By the end of the meeting they should have had their team goals in place and a plan on how to execute. Day two was fantastic. We couldn't ask for a better start to camp!
