At The Mercy of Mother Nature

One of the major aspects of Sports Camp is the competition between teams. Each camper is on a team and competes toward winning championships and the conference cup. They'll do this under the leadership of their coaches and veteran campers. They'll learn about teamwork and sportsmanship. After having arrived on Sunday, by Monday night they were already engaged in round one of the regular season games. The camp schedule is carefully thought out progressing toward tournament play and championship games. Mother Nature often reminds us during camp that there is something bigger than us and our plans. Yesterday she was unpredictable. Fortunately, we managed to play   every game on our schedule. They weren't played at the exact times but they were played. The weather has been like a roller coaster this week. Today is Day 5 of camp and we already have one round of outdoor games to make up due to stormy weather.

Although we have one team who is win less, the competition has been really close. Most of their games were determined by just a point or two. For the most part, the conferences are equal in wins. After eleven years of trying to find the magic formula for putting teams together perhaps Coach Alexander has found it! (fingers crossed)

Midwest   17-17
Eastern    16-18
Southern  19-15
Northern   17-17

Seven coaches awarded Superman Shirts at morning meeting yesterday. This is the award given to Campers of the Day. Typically this award is given to a camper who goes over and above camp expectations.

We played four rounds of games which started a little over an hour late due to morning storms. Individual instruction was postponed and will be made up today. Games were played at 10:30, 2:30, 4:30 and 6:45.

Soccer was the 'sport of the day'. Wow! There were some amazing games. Two of these games went into overtime and penalty kicks.

Notre Dame and Alabama met up in the afternoon. Notre Dame had a two goal lead which was wiped away with two goals in two minutes toward the end of regulation play. Alabama was elated! Notre Dame, although stunned kept their chins up and were excited about the overtime periods. The camaraderie between these two teams was fun to watch.

At the end of the two five minute overtime periods the game was tied. They lined up for PK's. Neither goalie gave up a goal until the last kickers. Notre Dame was victorious when they hit a top shelf kick just above the head of the Crimson Tide's goal keeper. It was an amazing kick and the kids went wild!

The evening soccer game between Penn State and Georgia also played into overtime and ended with PK's. This game remained 0-0 for several minutes. Although both teams have outstanding offensive players it was the defense and goal keepers of these two teams who stood out Thursday night. The Bulldogs won the PK phase of the game and the final score was 6-5. Go Dawgs!

All of the scores from yesterday are to the right of this post. It was a great day of competition and we're looking forward to more great games today. We're hoping to make up our missed games from the other day, individual instruction time, and also get out for our campfire tonight. It all depends on Mother Nature.
