What's a Weekend?

Friday was a full day. We continued to dodge stormy weather but only missed one session of outdoor games. Four full rounds of games were played and we made up games which were postponed from the other day. This is the good news!

The bad news is that we had to hold our weekly campfire and skit night indoors. It actually turned out to be ok. We met in Brown Lecture Hall which is located in our new math and computer science building (the one which houses our dining hall). Coach Marr queued up some great music which set the mood getting the campers pumped up for camper of the week awards and skits.

Our campfire hosts, Graham Goldstein, Jack Sari, and DeTrea Smith welcomed the campers and counselors with an opening monologue, lit the W, which was drawn with marker on the white board, and prompted the first cheer of the night. Six skits were performed and all sixteen teams awarded Camper of Week. Typically the teams use events from the week as material from their skits. Believe it or not, just four days into camp they have a lot of material to work with. In between skits head coaches said a few words about their camper of the week and then presented each one with a Woodberry cinch bag. The recipient of the weekly award has shown consistency in the qualities a coach appreciates. This might include, being helpful on dorm, displaying leadership qualities, unselfishness, participation in values meetings and thoughtful of others.

Our first campfire concluded with a vote for best skit and the results of the cleanest room contest. According to the campers, Harvard performed the best skit. It was a farce which poked fun at Coach Alexander. Virginia had the cleanest rooms with a perfect score of 100. The second place team was within half a point at 99.5 and the third place team sat at 99.25. The rooms this past week have been the cleanest rooms in the history of camp. Harvard and Virginia enjoyed pizza on dorm last night as a result of the two contests.

There were some competitive match ups earlier in the day. During the 10:30 game session Penn State and Alabama played three overtime periods on the gridiron. The score remained 0-0 at the beginning of the third OT. The first overtime period begins on the 10 yard line and each team has four downs to score. The second OT begins on the 5 yard line and again, each team has four downs. The final OT began on the 3 yard line. Because Penn State was on offense first for the third overtime but didn't score, Alabama decided to attempt a field goal for their third overtime play. The kick was good and Bama was victorious!

Other notable games of the day included Texas finally getting that monkey off their back! They won the morning hockey game and then turned around and won on the lacrosse field. Watch out! The Longhorns have arrived!

Just before dinner Michigan and Georgia played a close softball game. Both teams are loaded with fielders and hitters. They might just be the teams to watch on the ball field as the tournament progresses.

We're looking forward to a beautiful weekend. But what's a weekend? It occurred to me last night during campfire that the campers and counselors have no idea what day it is when a camper asked me that very question. There's no such thing as a weekend at camp. Today is business as usual and the weather is expected to cooperate for at least two days. Phew! Time to get the sunscreen out.
