Championship Tournament Heats Up At The Forest

After sleeping in one extra hour yesterday we enjoyed a hot breakfast and then met for our morning meeting. Coach Alexander announced the morning games and then teams raced down the hill. The Championship Tournament continued with five sessions being played. Although our high temperature for the day hovered around 69 degrees things heated up on the courts, diamond and fields.

Virginia and Notre Dame traded goals in handball. It was a fun game to watch. These two teams battled right up until the end when Virginia scored the final goal to secure the win.

The next handball game did not disappoint the spectators. LSU and Bama played fast and furious as well. This game was more of a defensive battle. The Tigers got the edge with the final goal for the win.

After lunch there were a couple of exciting and close games. Penn State nearly missed causing overtime on the gridiron. The scores in the football game came from two kick off returns by Bama and a 98 yard interception return for a touch down by Penn State. Bama had to kick an extra point to finalize the win. It was the most explosive football game so far in this year's camp.

After the football game we raced over to the soccer field. When we arrived the game had just gone into overtime. The score was 4-4. Overtime consists of five minutes, a halftime, and then another five minutes. It is not sudden death. It is simply a mini game. If the score is still tied, the teams compete by penalty kicks. This game, however  ended at the end of the ten minute overtime. Stanford scored toward the end of the firat five minutes. The overtime period was intense. It was another defensive battle.

The evening games did not disappoint. There were three intense games being played simultaneously. Stanford and Oregon traded touchdowns in football while Brown and Penn State battled in lacrosse and Alabama was upsetting Kentucky on the softball diamond. I raced from game to game to keep up with the action. What a fun night!

Oregon gave all they could to tie up their game against the Cardinal. Stanford would not give up. They scored with thirty seconds left in the game and although the Ducks were on the verge of getting another score Stanford stopped them. The final was 23-25 Stanford. It was a great effort by two great teams.

During the lacrosse game it was the young guys heating up the field. These guys were fighting for ground balls and racing to the goals. The Nittany Lions came up with the win 7-6.

Phew! What a day. I'll try and post a photo of each sports bracket and the tournament standings at some point today. Right now we're getting ready for our morning meeting and then we need to get some outdoor games played. Mother Nature is not cooperating today. We're expecting rain and storms. It rained yesterday but was not accompanied by thunder so we played outside all day but if we hear thunder today we'll only be able to play indoor games. Typically on the Fourth of July we also have a huge pool party complete with Tug o' War. It doesn't seem likely that we'll be outside for this. We've got a back up plan so today will still be full of fun. Enjoy the holiday!
