If teams were not scheduled to play during a session they were encouraged to either, enjoy the indoor pool, scout another sport, or play basketball in the Dick Gym. UNC was knocked out of a few sports but are still in basketball, dodgeball, handball and football. Because of the way the brackets were sitting yesterday morning, UNC didn't play until last night. They met up with Brown on the football field at 7pm. Brown had won two games earlier in the day. They were not predicted to be in this position. During the morning session they shut down Alabama's explosive offense and in the afternoon they shocked the world again by beating UVA. UNC had spent some time scouting these games knowing that they would end up playing the winner. Brown moved the ball well but the Tarheels goal line stands were impressive. After driving the ball inside the 20 yard line Brown was stuffed twice by UNC. The game was a shutout. UNC won 15-0.
Oregon's dream of a lacrosse championship was crushed when they faced West Point. The disciplined Black Knight's came in with a plan to take down the #1 seed Ducks. It wasn't easy. Both A and B teams traded scores. The game went into overtime. West Point got the first goal but time ran out before the Ducks could score. They were heartbroken. This was not how they wanted to start their day.
The lacrosse field seemed to be the place to be for overtime games yesterday. The 10:30 game between Navy and Penn State was a defensive battle. It was a low scoring game and at the end of the first overtime period Penn State had the lead and the Nittany Lions moved on to play later in the day. After lunch they met up with Kentucky. The Wildcats were hungry for some lions and were unstoppable. Their talented A and B teams scored in each quarter. The final was Kentucky 10 Penn State 6.
We enjoyed a longer rest period than normal yesterday. Fifteen minutes makes a difference during camp. The afternoon games started at 3:00 instead of 2:45. It rained hard during lunch but by the time campers needed to head down the hill the rain lightened up. The day remained gloomy and misty. Unfortunately I was unable to get many outdoor photos. I was able to film some games. The quality is questionable but it was fun to replay the action last night while uploading to Google. The sideline banter is entertaining.
Oregon found themselves in another tight game. During the afternoon soccer matchup they faced UVA. At the end of regulation the score was tied. The game ended at the end of the ten minute overtime. The final was UVA 5 Oregon 2. That was the last game of the day for the Ducks. They were able to put their feet up after dinner and re-group for today's basketball game. They'll face LSU at 10:45am.
Typically on the Fourth of July we celebrate by having a cook out at the pool, playing beach volleyball and enjoying a swim. Plan B went into effect yesterday. The dining hall staff grilled burgers and dogs for us in the dining hall and our staff picked them up and delivered to the Barbee. The campers, coaches and administrators enjoyed the cook out food despite the poor weather. We had to forego the annual Tug of War event as well. We're hoping to make it up today.
We're in the home stretch of the tournament and will play one championship game this morning. Kentucky and Michigan will face each other on the lacrosse field. It's going to be a great match up. Both teams have scored dozens of goals throughout the tournament. We can't wait to see how it turns out and will keep you posted on this game and all of the action here at the forest.
