Today started out as usual with breakfast, morning
meeting with awards and then morning games. After the morning games, we
switched things up and split the camp in half. One half went to the football
field and the other to lacrosse.
Teams heard from Coach Kyle Alexander about proper lacrosse technique
and rules while several counselors and members of the support staff
demonstrated exactly what not to do and what to do on the field.
On Hanes field Coach Clint Alexander explained the fundamentals
of effective blocking in football. Coaches and counselors showed the teams what
worked best during a game and what to avoid. Campers then had the opportunity
to take what they learned and try it on one another. Even with the heat,
campers and counselors really enjoyed cheering on and supporting the campers as
they faced off in a blocking drill.
These demonstrations come at a perfect time as
teams gear up for the upcoming tournaments.
The afternoon brought thunderstorms. Uggh! We knew they were headed our
way, so after rest period the teams raced down to the athletic fields and
courts to get the afternoon match ups started. Just before a storm cell blew in
we were able to get the games finished. While it was dark and rainy the camp
enjoyed canteen indoors and then took part in team meetings, handball, hockey
or dodgeball. We save dodgeball for rainy days. It is special!
We were able to get in our evening games. The
afternoon storms brought much needed relief from the heat. It was a cool and
breezy 75 degrees at game time. Tomorrow's forecast is calling for more storms.
Hopefully we can be outdoors for at least the first half of the day
though.
Check out the team standings shown above. The
conference standings are pretty tight between the South and the Midwest. We'll
see what happens during the rest of the week.
