Mission Accomplished

Today we were on a mission to complete all of the scheduled contests. The Weather Channel predicted that the afternoon and evening hours would bring severe thunderstorms. Because of this we played back to back games during the morning session. Things were still clear around lunch time so post lunch we headed down the hill and played the final matches of the day. Once those were finished the skies still appeared to be stable so we continued on with individual testing. The campers have been taking part in individual instruction since the beginning of camp. Now is when we begin to see just how good they are at particular sports. This year the campers were asked to sign up for 3 sports and an alternate they would like to be tested on. At the end of camp, the scores will be tallied by age group. Campers will be awarded 1st through 3rd place in their age category.

We had a few overtime games today. Texas AM and Stanford went into overtime on the hockey court this morning. Stanford pulled off the win 4-3. Stanford was once again involved in an overtime game during the second session of games. This time they were on the soccer field with Duke. They edged ahead in this one as well playing through 2 overtimes and finally a penalty kick phase. The final score was Stanford 4 PK's to Duke's 2. Over on the handball court Virginia and Notre Dame played a fierce game. This match up went into 2 overtime periods. Virginia was victorious in the end by a score of 5-4. The last set of games brought another overtime match on the hockey court. LSU beat out Michigan 3-2.

Because we had finished all of the games for the day before dinner, we improvised for the evening session. It was decided that the 10, 11 and 12 year olds would head down the hill and play a series of indoor games. This would include; basketball, handball and hockey. Meanwhile, the 13 and 14 year olds went over the Glover Center. The Glover Center is a fitness center. All of the Woodberry Forest athletic teams train in the Glover Fitness Center. Tonight the older campers learned about proper weight training. Counselors demonstrated lifts and then the campers were able to try them out as well.

The poor weather prediction never amounted to anything. It was actually a beautiful evening. The temperatures had cooled off just a bit and there was a light breeze. Nonetheless, changing camp up never hurts. The campers truly enjoyed a change of pace today.

It's hard to believe we are almost to the end of our second week. Tomorrow we will hold our second campfire night. Friday is a special day during camp. We sure are looking forward to it!
