They're Here!

Yesterday we kicked off the 47th Annual Woodberry Forest Sports Camp. 180 campers began arriving before 8 am. Each camper was greeted by a host of counselors and Coach Alexander. The boys checked the roster to see what team they will be on. For the most part the campers were pleased with their team assignments. Occasionally a Georgia fan was disappointed to find he was placed on Auburn and we even came across a fella who wanted to be put on any Big 12 team except Texas. Of course he is on Texas! The veterans quickly said goodbye to their parents and before we knew it lunch was over and it was time to gather at Johnson Stadium for Coach Alexander's welcome and introductions.

We didn't waste anytime yesterday as we went right into camp mode. Each team came together for a practice session which was followed by the boys splitting into their age groups for work on individual sports. During individual instruction the campers will go to one of the following stations: tennis, golf, football skills, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, basketball, football specialty (punting, kicking, long snapping, returning kicks and punts), baseball, swimming, wrestling, and speed training.

Dinner was also followed by a team practice. The kids then enjoyed their first canteen snack, a quick shower and then they raced up the hill for the first of the nightly values meetings. Last night they discussed goal setting. Each team met individually to discuss their team goal for the camp. They were to base these goals on values and not 'outcomes'.

It was a very full first day and I'm sure everyone slept well. This morning brings another filled with sunshine. The forecast is calling for higher temperatures and humidity. Today's keyword 'hydrate'. The kids will quickly catch on!
