We've gone full steam ahead into camp. With fifteen teams we had to go straight into competition earlier than ever before. Our final week of camp will consist of tournament play and championship games.
Two match ups this morning went into overtime. Once again the soccer game was decided by PK's. NC State came out ahead on that one. Meanwhile, inside on the hockey court, Harvard defeated LSU 5-4 in overtime. By canteen time things had already heated up. Not only in game play but also outdoors. It was close to 90 degrees before we even finished individual instruction. Today's keyword was again, HYDRATE!
Following rest period the campers attended the clinics they signed up for. These kids are smart. The majority of them signed up for indoor clinics. (staying out of the heat) New to the clinic scene this year is Handball. We added it to our list of games last year. What a great addition. After seeing it played in the Olympics we had a hunch it might be a team sport the kids would enjoy. Tournament play is now based on the following: flag football, basketball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, floor hockey, and handball. Handball has turned out to be one of the most popular sports.
We didn't have any overtime games during the afternoon session but we were not disappointed in what we saw. Auburn scored 24 points in handball and Notre Dame dominated on the basketball court. During the evening session Oregon beat NC State in overtime in basketball. Things apparently got pretty exciting over in The Cage. Two teams went undefeated today, Notre Dame and Alabama. It's too soon to tell how things will play out though.
All is well at the Forest. We're looking forward to seeing what the rest of the week has in store!

Let The Games Begin
Our first full day of camp began with wake up, breakfast, clinic sign up and morning meeting. Each team proceeded down the hill together for a practice. The coaches chose which sport they wanted to work on. Most of them went with the sport they would be playing during the evening session of camp. It would be their first game of the season.
Before lunch campers went to individual instruction. Rest period was quiet today. The temperatures climbed quickly into the 90's so it was a hot and steamy day. The coaches were smart to ask the campers to turn off the lights and get off their feet in order to rest.
We also held our first clinics of the camp. Campers can choose to attend basketball, football, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, golf, soccer, wrestling or handball. During the clinic, the camper will sharpen their skills or perhaps even learn something new. Campers are encouraged to attend the clinics of sports in which they want to learn more or improve. Sometimes a coach will ask an entire team to attend a clinic. We had a record number of boys sign up for the golf clinic today, so we allowed a counselor to take several of the experienced players on our nine hole golf course.
After canteen we held practices by conference. The midwest conference practiced basketball, eastern - football and so on. Not only do our teams compete against each other during the course of camp, they also compete by conference. Campers find themselves cheering on the teams in their conference. Each conference director is responsible for the teams and coaches in each conference. The directors are often attending the practices of their teams, helping them in areas of weakness. A conference cup is awarded at the end of camp. The 'grown up' conference directors are just as competitive as the boys they coach! No surprise there.
Chicken fingers and macaroni and cheese were on the dinner menu last night. It happens to be a favorite of most everyone. This is also no surprise! We'll surely have it again during the course of the three week camp. Following dinner we met on the steps of the Dick Gym for a pre-first game meeting. Coach Alexander had a long list of items to discuss. It was more of a long scroll of items and took several minutes. After a full 36 hours of camp there are usually things that need to be 'nipped' and he did just that!
With fifteen teams this year there will always be one team during game sessions with a bye. Last night West Point sat out during the first round of games. They were spotted scouting their first opponent at the soccer game. This was a smart move on their part. What a game it was! Brown played Yale and the game ended with a Penalty Kick (PK's) phase. At the end of the first and only overtime period the teams were tied at 1. Brown came through in PK's with 3 in order to win. The final was 1-1/ PK's 3-2 Brown.
As usual, the football game was the last game to end. Teams gathered around the football field to watch the exciting end. Notre Dame was leading 6-0 over Kentucky. They were driving near Kentucky's 20 yard line when they turned it over on downs. Kentucky then had to drive 80 yards to at least tie it up. There wasn't much time left but before we knew it they were down in Notre Dame territory. In a last second attempt Notre Dame was able to thwart Kentucky's drive. The final was 6-0. The evening games did not disappoint. The game scores are posted on the right side of this blog.
The Fir Tree was open last night for the first time. Some teams lined up after evening games to get their milk shake and favorite fast food item. Other teams held their evening values meeting and then went to the Fir Tree. The top selling items include bacon, egg and cheese on bagel, curly fries, and the Gus Burger. The Gus burger is a cheese burger with a fried egg on top. Sounds delicious!
Last night's values meeting topic was 'accountable'. This topic speaks to the individual and how he can take responsibility for his own actions. It's a great concept for these guys to learn at such a young age.
Enjoy the link to yesterday's photos. It was a great day for photos but I apologize for the amount. There will not always be so many. We typically average 300 but the first few days there are always more. We just can't resist capturing every moment!
