We don't leave our games in a tie here at camp. There's no fun in that but the gang did have fun watching USA vs Portugal. Dinner was served early and then the campers were off to dorm. Each dorm has a common area with a large television. Because there are so many teams in Dowd/Finch we decided to host two. Alabama and NC State piled into our basement. I wish I had a video camera on them the whole time. Each time USA scored or came close to scoring the kids went crazy. They began to chant USA, USA, USA. Soooo Cute!!!
Yesterday was a really great camp day. In nine years I've never experienced two camp days in a row where the temperatures didn't quite reached 80 degrees. We've been spoiled this year. The storm was worth it the other day as it brought pleasant temperatures both Saturday and Sunday.
There were some exciting games. Over the past few days UNC has played in three overtime games. They didn't win any of them but they're having a great time! Yesterday their evening soccer game was tied at the end of regulation. The five minute overtime period was added. If the teams are tied at the end of five minutes then the Penalty Kick phase is implemented. Unfortunately for the Tarheels, NC State scored twice in OT. The final was 5-3 NC State. Both teams have some talented soccer players. It was definitely a game worth watching!
Other notable games include; Texas vs. Oregon in the morning soccer match up. This game played to a 2-2 tie at the end of OT and finished with Oregon making 5 PK's to Texas' 4. It became an instant 'Western Conference Classic'. Oregon went 3-0 yesterday. Watch out for the Ducks! Meanwhile, Notre Dame vs. Kentucky went into overtime in hockey. The Wildcats came out ahead by a score of 8-7. During the evening session we watched an Ivy League match up between Brown and Harvard. Both teams played incredible defense and I suspect both of them will be tough to beat in hockey down the stretch. The final was Brown 2 - Harvard 1 OT. Adjacent to the hockey court we saw Notre Dame and Georgia play to a final score 11-10 in OT. ND came out on top. Again, it was both the A & B teams which were strong. The younger guys can really throw that ball. It's such a fun sport to watch.
We're looking forward to week two. We have a lot of fun things in store so stay tuned and enjoy your Monday!
