Testing Day

One of the highlights of camp is the 'individual competition'. Campers compete by age group in the following sports: football, golf, swimming, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, tennis, and soccer. At the end of camp, some of the athletes receive a ribbon in their exit packet indicating their placement in the sport. They will not find out their placement until they open their packet. Yesterday we began the testing for this competition. Last week campers were asked to sign up in order to compete in their 'three' favorite sports.

After rest period about 40 campers went to the outdoor pool and the remaining 140 campers went to their assigned sport. Today a different group of roughly 40 campers will go to the pool and the others will compete. By the end of the day on Friday every camper will have completed their testing.

On the football field contestants perform by punting and passing. They are graded on their distance and accuracy. In lacrosse the campers take dozens of shots on goal. On the soccer field they try for penalty kicks. The golfers compete by chipping and putting. Each tennis player plays a match against an opponent of the same age; the winner progresses to the next round until first, second, and third place is determined. Baseball players hit pitches and the distance of the hit is recorded. Indoors, campers shoot free throws on the basketball court and the swimmers compete in a 50m race. Times are recorded and placement is determined.

This entire process has taken the place of afternoon sign up clinics. We're still playing at least four games per day though. Saturday we'll begin the team tournament. Coach Alexander will have brackets in place sometime on Friday so that teams can see where they are seeded in each sport. This is when things get really exciting.

Tonight we hold our King's Dominion Draft. This became an annual event just a few years ago and is one of the most fun night's in camp. We'll report on this event and share photos tomorrow morning.

If you are viewing the photos on Google, have you noticed that occasionally I post a video or two? These are located at the bottom of the page of  photos on the Google Photo site. The videos are completely random. The day before yesterday I caught some kids from West Point 'shaking it' on the football field. What a riot! These kids have some amazing moves. Last evening we posted some football clips and a pressure filled situation on the basketball court.  I'm sure we'll capture some more compelling moments in the days to come. Enjoy!
