The first pick of the 2014 King's Dominion Draft was Blakely Castleman. He's an assistant coach for the Georgia Bulldogs. He is also the brother of a camper on the team which drafted him. Each year the campers assemble their own teams in preparation for the trip to King's Dominion. They may travel in groups of 3-7 while in the park. We ask them to create a team name. The names are put on an index card. At the draft, Coach Alexander draws a card and announces the name of the team which will make their draft pick. Some of the team names included: Coaster Boys, Coaster Bro's, Tigers, Football is a Team Sport, The Raleigh Boys, VA, GA, and Colossal Crazies, just to name a few.
The names of the counselors eligible for the draft are placed on a board. As the counselors are drafted, their name is erased and they are no longer available. The excitement in the Barbee is much like the real NFL draft. It's also a little like the NYSE floor. There were some highly 'fought over' counselors. Teams would cheer or jeer when a counselor was drafted. It was a great night despite the fact that it took over ninety minutes. After the draft the teams enjoyed pizza on dorm.
