Champions!

Happy 4th of July!

Today began with a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by the entire camp on the steps of the Dick Gym. WOW! It brought 'the goosebumps.'

We then finished up our individual challenges and playoff games. After lunch we watched Alabama and Michigan finish up their football game. Michigan had a great plan and did some great things but the Alabama offense was just too much. The final was 40-25. Roll Tide!

Inside the Barbee the handball final was going on. Auburn came up against Brown. As I mentioned earlier in the week, Brown had ARRIVED! They shut down Auburn's dynamic offense and dominated the championship. Great Job Bears!

Next up, Soccer - Yale vs. Notre Dame. The Irish came through with a shut out. They were AMAZING today. The final was 4-0.

The final championship game to be played was basketball. Yale had a BIG day. They played a basketball playoff and a soccer championship. They are to be commended! By the time they got to the basketball court they just didn't have much more to give. NC State also played in a basketball game earlier in the day. The momentum from that win carried through and they beat Yale. GO Pack!

We've had dinner and fun at the outdoor pool now we're off to the final campfire. We'll see you tomorrow. Safe Travels!

Race to the Finish

Phew! We fit so much in yesterday. Thankfully today is a "sleep in" day. It's the 4th of July and we've got so much in store. We're sill working on crowning champions. So far Softball, Lacrosse and Hockey champions have been determined. The Brown Bears currently hold 2 championships. Yesterday they beat Alabama in lacrosse by a score of 8-5. Both their A and B teams are amazing on the lacrosse field.

During the morning session we also continued the playoffs in hockey and handball. Auburn and UNC met up on the hockey court while NC State and Notre Dame battled it out in handball.

After canteen it was time for a big event. It's a 'crowd favorite', the annual WFS Sports Camp Wrestling Tournament. Campers voluntarily sign up for this. Campers only wrestle other campers equal to their size. After wrestling, the entire camp watched the 400 meter run and the 55 meter run then it was time for the Basketball Shootout. These events are things we normally would do on July 4th. Because of the weather  issues over the past few days we've had to change things around. Yesterday called for storms on and off throughout the day so we opted to take care of indoor individual events. Teams select campers to compete in individual competitions for the July 4th Tournament.  Each camper is required and allowed to compete in only 2 events. The only exception is the relay race - 4 x 200m. The teams gain points based on placement in each competition. What's the prize? Lunch at the local Mexican Restaurant, El Vaquero.

After lunch and rest period we gathered on the steps of the Dick Gym to find out what was going to happen next. It was determined that we needed to stay indoors again. Coach Alexander introduced a new event. After the teams representatives competed in the swim competition coaches from each team competed in a BELLY FLOP contest. The video is soon to be released! The crowd loved it.

Another new event is the 'Gus Macker style Basketball Tournament' for little biscuits as coach Alexander likes to call them! Campers ages 10 and 11 competed in teams of three by team. While that was going on we were still holding playoff games. Other teams played dodgeball. I told you it was a full day!

Today is gorgeous by the way. We are meeting shortly to finish out the July 4th Tournament events and then we'll watch Alabama and Michigan finish their football championship and on the soccer field we'll see Yale take on Notre Dame. It's going to be a great finish.
