We had a lot of games to play today so after the morning meeting everyone raced down the hill to get started. The extra sleep must have given the teams more steam and energy because three of our morning games went into overtime and three more were determined by only one score. Harvard and West Point met up on the football field and were tied at zero at the end of regulation. Overtime began on the 25 yard line much like a college game. West Point scored on three plays and made their extra point which was a kick from 15 yards out. Harvard failed to answer so the final was West Point 7, Harvard 0.
Over on the lacrosse field, Kentucky and Michigan traded scores throughout the game. In the end, Michigan pulled ahead in overtime to win 10-9. Inside the Barbee, Notre Dame and Stanford matched up well in handball. Both are very strong in this sport so it was definitely the game to watch today. Notre Dame pulled off the win 15-12. I've heard there is one boy on the Notre Dame squad who can "score at will". This kind of talent is always an asset!
Some teams played six games today. Because we had to omit the afternoon and evening games yesterday we decided to try and make them up today. We were able to make up yesterday's 4:45pm games. The only game we were able to make up from the previous evening was the softball game. Softball is played quickly so after tonight's seven o'clock games we played a make-up softball game. Did you get all this? Quiz at the end of the blog...
The Michigan and UNC soccer game this afternoon went into the penalty kick phase. This is always exciting (except when it happens before dinner and then we get behind schedule). At the end of regulation the game was tied at 2. Michigan won with 4 penalty kick goals to UNC's 3. This type of soccer game is so exciting. During the evening session we had one overtime game. On the soccer field, once again, we played an overtime session. We only go into the penalty kick phase if at the end of one ten minute overtime session we're still tied. The Penn State/Harvard game was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation but during overtime Penn State scored two goals. The final was 6-4.
One game was played after the seven o'clock session which was a softball game. Stanford beat Alabama 11-4. These two teams were fortunate to be on the fields at sunset tonight because it was gorgeous! I'm not sure the kids appreciated it as much as we did. What they did appreciate is the fact that we kept the Fir Tree open to accommodate their lateness!
We've played 21 rounds of games so far. It's been a pretty good week and we can't wait to see what Week 2 brings. Happy Summer Solstice everyone!
