Tuesday Shoot Out

Tuesday we had a full day of games scheduled but because of the extreme temperatures, we decided to forego all turf games in the afternoon. Instead, we met up on the soccer field for the individual Soccer Shootout and Lacrosse Shootout. After the first week of camp, when the teams have had a chance to work on individual sports, they choose a representative to take part in various competitions. The entire camp watched as the team representatives took part in two of the events yesterday.

The first event was the Soccer Shootout. Campers were given a chance to kick eight balls from various distances into the goal. There is a goalie so this event is extremely challenging. It is also timed. Yesterday's top soccer player represented Kentucky. Hamer Brigman made five goals in 23.20 seconds. This is quite an accomplishment as the goalie is an 'All Prep League' goalie with many other accolades as well!

The Lacrosse Shootout was set up adjacent to the soccer field so that the entire camp could simply walk twenty feet to view. On this field, contestants had ten opportunities to make a goal. There is no goalie in the net but the net is covered with a board. This is the same board which covers the net during our lacrosse games. It is quite challenging as the openings around the board are only a few inches wide. We do not allow play with a live goalie as it is too dangerous. Part two of the shootout is speed. Coach Gay sits behind a net with a speed gun and measures the speed of the shot. The winner of this event represented the Michigan Wolverines... GO BLUE!... Christian Matthews shot seven of ten goals and his speed was 59mph. He didn't have the quickest speed but his overall score was good enough to win! The fastest shot goes to Cole McCoy with West Point. His speed was 73mph.

Yesterday's weather was a little unstable but we were able to get the games started during the evening session. We did not complete them. Lightning was spotted within an unsafe distance so we all  ran indoors. The games were played long enough so that we could calculate a winner, but I know the kids were disappointed not to actually finish. It's hard to believe that at the end of the day they seem to have more energy than they did at the beginning. They never cease to astound me.

Today it is much cooler and the chance of storms is low. We should be able to complete a full day. It's almost tournament time so it's imperative that we get our games played today, tomorrow and Friday. We'd also like to get some teams out to the campsite. Hopefully we'll be there tonight and I can get some photos. Our campsite is set up in one of the most picturesque places on campus. I can't wait to share it with you. Until then, have a wonderful day!
