Fourteen Hour Days!
Week 2 has flown by. The campers, coaches and administrators have been working fourteen hour days and still going strong! It's hard to believe we've finished individual testing and regular season games. We have seen so much growth from the boys and their teams. In one of yesterday's meetings Coach Alexander told everyone how proud he is of this growth. The night before he sat in on a meeting with a team and was impressed by how they communicated with one another. Each member was thoughtfully contributing to the discussion. This cohesiveness is essential to tournament play. The tournament begins today.
While Coach Alexander and Coach Reece were setting up the brackets, campers were divided into their age groups and then organized by conference. The teams by age competed in soccer, basketball, football, and lacrosse. For example, the ten and eleven year olds from the midwest and eastern conference played a game of soccer and the same age group from the northern and southern conference played basketball. After dinner these groups switched sports. They had a blast! It was so fun seeing them competing with kids their own age. The twelve to fourteen age group played lacrosse and football. They were able to shift into that extra gear which they might have been holding back during the regular season. The younger campers sometimes were just plain silly!
We held our annual belly flop contest yesterday afternoon. The entire camp gathered inside the Ruffin Memorial Natatorium to watch one representative (coach or official) from each team flop into the pool. The judges this year were Coach Alexander, Mrs. Lewis and Woodberry's Varsity Basketball Coach Craig Dawson. This year's winner was Michigan Coach Wylie Mendocino. Wylie also won the contest last year. He has no fear!
Last night we held our second campfire. We ended up having it in the Barbee Center. The forecast called for rain during the evening hours so we planned on using the Barbee instead. It didn't end up raining as predicted so we could have been outdoors. The campfire was equally as fun inside so in the end it didn't really matter! Camper of the Week was presented to sixteen different campers and we watched six hilarious skits!
Today it is going to rain a lot. As long as there is no lightning we will be able to play lacrosse, soccer, and football. The softball games will have to be made up if the rain continues to fall. Campers in past years have actually enjoyed rain play. The coaches find it a little more challenging as these games determine whether or not you advance to the next round. Coach Alexander told the group last night to think positively about playing in the rain. He said if you believe that the rain will hinder your play then it will. If they believe it will not have an impact then it won't. "Just go out and play!"
Hopefully it's not raining where you are today and that you have the opportunity to be outdoors enjoying summer. We're looking forward to entering the next phase of Sports Camp. I'll post the bracket standings later today. Until then, enjoy some highlights of yesterday!
