Standings after Round 7!

Tournament and Draft Day

Saturday was another big day at Sports Camp. We played rounds one through five of the tournament and finished the day with the annual counselor draft. It was a full and fun day.

The weather did not stop us! Teams played in wet sloppy conditions on the soccer field. The turf fields were fine but the rain did affect visibility. There's nothing like a little adversity to add to the competition. It rained on and off but never hard. The temperatures stayed in the 70's. After lunch we had a reprieve. The sun came out and warmed things up and dried things out.

Overall the tournament is going well. We watched some great games. To start the day, Georgia and West Point played overtime on the football field. The score was 7-7 for most of regulation play. In overtime, on fourth down, Georgia kicked a 21 yard field goal to win the game.

Round 2 games were a little soggy. We experienced consistent rainfall during the first session so the soccer field was quite saturated by 10:30am. Harvard and Texas played a close match in water logged cleats and with a slippery ball. There were some laughs but there was also a lot of determination on their faces. The final was Harvard 3, Texas 2.  It was a great game to watch!

It poured during lunch and rest period and the rain was quite heavy at times. We were thrilled when, as predicted, the rain stopped around 2:00pm and by 2:45pm we were on the fields ready to go. Eventually the sun came out. We did not expect to see the sun. Cloudy skies were forecast for the entire day. The afternoon was delightful.

There was another barn burner on the gridiron. Kentucky and Texas played through double overtime. Wow! It was a fun game to watch. In the second overtime the teams start out on the ten yard line. If they score they are forced to 'go for two'. Two points are given if they score from the eight yard line.  They can also choose to gain their two points by kicking a field goal from the fifteen yard line. Kentucky attempted two points by running it in from the eight yard line. They failed but held Texas from scoring on their possession. The final was Kentucky 36, Texas 28.

Before the 4:45pm games we were treated to the Annual WFS Sports Camp Wrestling Takedown Tournament. Campers volunteer to wrestle. Coach Budlong, Woodberry's Varsity Wrestling Coach, organizes the boys by weight. The entire camp gathers around the wrestling mat. The Barbee Center is always the loudest during this tournament. Everyone has a great time!

After dinner Round 5 was completed but the big story was the King's Dominion Draft  of 2015! Eligible counselors names were placed on a board. Earlier in the week campers organized themselves into small teams which will parade around King's Dominion together this week. We ask them to give their teams a name. A few notable team names include: The 919, The Kids at Sports Camp, The Cool Guys, and The Trash Cans. The teams are made up of three to seven campers. Each team was given the opportunity to 'draft' the counselor of their choice to accompany them around the amusement park. Coach Alexander chooses a card with the team name on it and then brings the team up to make their selection. It is run similarly to the famous NFL Draft! (loosely similar) Last night's first pick of the first round was... Michigan's DeTrea Smith! Loud cheers and some sounds of disappointment filled the Barbee. Disappointment? Yes, many teams had planned to draft the very popular Mr. Smith! After every tenth team chose a counselor, we watched conference representatives 'lip sync'. Last night was the first annual Lip Sync Battle of Sports Camp. It was pretty good for a first try. Some of the song selections included Whitney Houston's, I Will Always Love You and Beyonce's Drunk in Love. There was a definite theme! Draft night was finally finished at around 10:00pm. Teams gathered together to head up the hill. On their way each camper and counselor grabbed a bottle of water. The coaches grabbed a couple of pizzas for their team as well.

We're thankful today is a 'sleep in' day because of the late night. We have several rounds of tournament play to get through today. The sun is out and the birds are chirping. It's going to be a glorious Sunday!

Enjoy the photos from last night's draft!
